About Me?
Society tells us to be pretty, to be thin. To be the best of the best and even better than those people. Society wants us to fit inside the boxes it has so neatly created for us and to break the mold at the same time. Society wants perfect daughters, caring sisters, dedicated students, loving wives, and compassionate members of the community. We are told to be lovely, and lovable. To be emotional enough to feel the pain of those around us but never to display the pain we feel inside. Be functional. Be more than functional. Be an inspiration, be something no one has ever seen before. We are told to fit what society wants us to be, to do something to fill the needs of those around us. We are asked to fill the economy with brighter versions of the last generation, to fill the workforce, to fill the churches. We are asked to be numbers in a machine, where every single identifier we have, Student IDs, Social Security, Driver’s license, Badge numbers. Everything is reduced to numbers, Ones and Zeros. We are reduced to the boxes we fill on a form. We are asked to know who we are from the time we can count to one hundred with no excuses…. just as long as who we are fits what society needs. Otherwise we are discarded, we are left as outcasts of society. We are frowned upon. We live in a Binary world where you are a winner or a loser. You are Smart or Stupid. You are a perfect….. or you are a failure.
I am none of these things. I want to be none of these things. I am a mess of a person in a world with straight cut lines. I overflow and am too much. I am too much, and not enough. I dont know who I am…. and I don’t think I ever will if society keeps telling me who I am supposed to be.
